DUSSEHRA
Ravan although a son of a sage got teachings of her demon mother but he received his spiritual father’s sacraments by birth. He became the worshipper and devotee of God Shiva and the most knowledgeable scholar of Vedas and Puranas. His knowledge was appreciated even by God Ram also at the time when Ravan was lying hurt in the end of war. He asked God Ram to explore his actual form to him as he knew who he was. Then God Ram transformed himself into his real form of care taker of the universe God Vishnu and blessed Ravan by forgiving his sin. He was explained that his end was decided already by the nature the way his life was going to complete.
The story of killing of Ravan started with the story of her sister who got deluded at God Ram and proposed him. God Ram refused and said he was married so couldn’t accept her offer. Then she saw Laxman, younger son of God Ram and got fascinated at him. She proposed him too but he denied her proposal as he knew her actual origin. Deities couldn’t marry demons and she belonged to a demons origin who changed her form into a beautiful human female. She threatened Laxman to take him away with her. Laxman got angry and cut her nose. She ran back to her brother Ravan and described all the incident to him. Ravan on her behalf abducted Goddess Sita by book and crook and took her to his place at Sri Lanka. After that the story of killing of Ravan started.
As he was a great scholar but he had received teachings of her demon mother, he conquered all the world and tortured humans. His karmas were of demons as guided by her mother. If he had followed his father’s teachings, he would have been a great sage and well wisher of the world.
After killing Ravan, God Ram returned to Ayodhaya with Goddess Sita and all who were with him in the war. When he returned, the people of Ayodhya welcomed God Ram and celebrated his return with lighting thousands of lamps and decorating Ayodhya with flowers. After that the victory of God Ram over Ravan was celebrated with joy and pride. By then, the three effigies of Ravan, Kumbhkaran (his brother) and Meghnath (his son) are burnt every year on the day of Dussehra for celebrating the victory of good over evil. It is written according to religion that good will survive and bad or evil has to end.
